Shooting Mechanics /Energy leaks

The arm flop:

This is another common mechanical shooting error frequently seen in youth players. This flaw is tricky because players can make shots with the arm flop but it definitely causes shot inconsistency.

It tricks players into thinking that it is okay to shoot this way simply because they still see the ball go into the basket.

This mechanical error is caused by a player lacking body control  as this sequence in the shot requires control of isolated movements.

On the shot release the arm violently drops or flops where the follow through looks horizontal (referred to as a low elbow release). Typically with the follow through the shooting arm freezes at a forty five degree angle. Most coaches refer to it as finishing the shot with a high elbow.

The follow through is critical to the shot accuracy. When the arm flops on the release it automatically changes the trajectory of the shot as gravity bulls the ball in a downward motion because of the swinging downward motion of the follow through.

This creates massive energy leaks with the shot as the ball  loses arc creating a flat looking shot referred as rim shots where the margin of error is vast causing the ball to hit the front of the rim first or hit the back of the rim with a straight line drive where
