I have been coaching basketball for 13+ years now in the area of skill development, specializing in elite movement patterns and shooting mechanics.
I have seen a phemomena of skilled players who break down mechanically at certain levels of competition and hit developmental plateaus also that they can’t seem to overcome.
Sometimes as skill coaches we can focus too much on teaching the skills that we overlook one of the maim reasons why some players stall or struggle in their development and why executing certain movements are difficult.
One player can be skillful but still struggle to do specific movements to advance their skills, while another player can’t improve or stay stuck at the beginner level too long.
In my experience what often goes undiagnosed and contribute to being underdeveloped for both players is a lack of athletic ability. Some players have it more naturally, while others lack it but can develop it also. Although there are varying factors that can determine a player’ s ultimate success, a lack of athletic ability can hinder a player’s overall potential.
To parents and players make sure you all invest into performance enhancement training along with skill development, that I will get more into my next post. They both go hand in hand and the data shows that if a player has both, they dramatically increase their chances of forming into an elite player.
