I have been coaching basketball for 13+years in the area of player development, specializing in elite movement patterns and shooting mechanics. I have seen a phenomenon of skilled players who break down at a certain level of competition and hit a development plateau that they can’t seem to overcome.
Sometimes as skills coaches we can focus too much on teaching the skills themselves that we overlook one of the main reasons why players sometimes stall or struggle in their development and why executing certain movements are difficult.
One player can somewhat be skillful but still struggle to do specific movements to advance their skills, while another player can’t improve as a beginner to develop a baseline for fundamentals. In my experience what often goes undiagnosed or overlooked that is a main cause for under development for both types of players is a lack of athletic ability. Some players have it more naturally while others lack it but can be developed also. Although there are varying factors that can determine a player’s ultimate success, a lack of athletic ability can hinder a player’s overall potential.
To parents and players make sure you invest into performance enhancement training along with skill development. They both go hand in hand and the data shows that if you have both you dramatically increase your chances of forming into an elite player.
